Game Story

The Manitoba Moose (25-6-2-2) closed out a quick road swing against the Iowa Wild (15-12-6-3) at Wells Fargo Arena on Saturday night.  The Moose got off to a quick start, scoring just 33 seconds into the contest as Patrice Cormier jammed in a rebound for his 15th goal of the season.  Eric Comrie wasn’t overly busy in the period, making seven saves, but the chances he faced were quality opportunities as the Moose goaltender got into his first action since Dec. 15.  Manitoba extended the lead with 5:06 left in the frame when Michael Spacek put a beautiful pass to Sami Niku behind the Iowa defence, and Niku finished the play to send the Moose to the break, leading 2-0.

The Moose made it a 3-0 lead 2:41 into the second courtesy of Brody Sutter finishing off a nice setup from Jimmy Lodge.  Iowa got on the board with a power play marker off the stick of Justin Kloos who cleaned up a rebound in front.  Special teams played a big part in the period as the Moose kept the Wild from pulling closer when the Wild enjoyed some time with a four-on-three, becoming a five-on-three power play.  Following the Moose penalty kill, Patrice Cormier and Buddy Robinson came out of the box together and promptly drew a penalty, sending the Moose to what would be a profitable power play.  Michael Spacek ripped home his sixth of the campaign to restore the three-goal lead with 2:36 left in the period.  Iowa got back within two tallies as Sam Anas capitalized on a late power play, scoring with 46 seconds left to get the Wild within a 4-2 score after 40 minutes.

Iowa cut the Moose lead down to one on a highlight reel goal from Gerald Mayhew, going between the legs to pop a puck up under the bar at the 9:40 mark of the third period. The Moose had a pair of chances to restore the two-goal cushion, but C.J. Motte held them back to keep Iowa within one.  With the Wild net empty, Mike Sgarbossa hit the post on a chance to ice the game, but from there the Moose were able to hold on for the 4-3 victory, their 25th of the season.
