Game Story
The Manitoba Moose (23-30-4-4) closed out their season series against the Charlotte Checkers (28-27-4-0) at MTS Centre on Friday night.  One night after tallying three times in the first, the Checkers got off to another strong start.  Lucas Wallmark opened the scoring with a shorthanded goal 4:57 into the period.  Charlotte added to the lead 1:36 later when Connor Brickley fired in a Wallmark rebound for the 2-0 lead.  The Checkers made it 3-0 off Trevor Carrick’s wrister through traffic at the 10:16 mark.  The goal prompted a goaltending switch as Jamie Phillips came into the game for Eric Comrie.  Manitoba got one goal back when Kyle Connor broke in alone before putting on a quick move to beat Tom McCollum and cut the lead to 3-1 before the break.

Similar to last night’s game, the Moose put together a strong second period.  The hosts outshot the visitors by an 18-6 count in the period.  Unfortunately for Manitoba, McCollum was on his game in his Charlotte debut, turning aside all 18 shots.  With the Moose unable to chip away at the Charlotte lead, the Checkers took a 3-1 advantage to the third.

Manitoba kept up the pressure in the final frame, but Charlotte added to its edge early on.  Just over five minutes into the period, Andrew Miller found room on an odd-man rush and had the time to pick his corner for a 4-1 Charlotte lead.  The Moose continued to put pucks toward the net, but McCollum stopped all 16 in the period to lead the Checkers to the 4-1 victory.

Quick Hits

  • The Moose fired a season-high 50 shots on goal.
  • Kyle Connor scored his 11th goal of the last eight games. He is tied for fourth among AHL rookies with 19 goals on the season.
  • Game attendance was announced at 4,483.

Quotable
Head Coach Pascal Vincent – “Five minutes.  They scored three goals in five minutes and that’s the block.  Our plan was to shoot a lot of pucks to the net and we did that, especially in the second period, but then there’s got to be a follow up and we need net traffic.”
