Game Story
The Manitoba Moose (38-18-4-4) and Texas Stars (33-22-7-3) faced off for the second time in four days. On Saturday night, the Stars took the lead early, with former Milwaukee Admiral Tyler Kelleher making a nice move in front, and snuck one past Jamie Phillips. The Moose then had two consecutive power play opportunities, with the best scoring opportunity coming to Brody Sutter, who found some space but couldn't beat Mike McKenna. The Moose kept the momentum rolling after the power plays, creating traffic in front of McKenna and cycling the puck well. At the end of the frame, Manitoba was down a goal but outshooting Texas 8-4.
The second period started off looking just like the first good puck movement led to Texas's second goal, this time off the stick of Roope Hintz on the power play. The physical play picked up leading to some four-on-four action. Dallas took advantage of the extra space when Sheldon Dries found a rebound and put Texas up by three. That lead to a goalie change for the Moose, as Colton Phinney stepped in for his first AHL action. On the power play, just 1:23 later Michael Spacek found his spot on the power play, and hammered home his 10th extra-man goal on the campaign. That lead wouldn't last though, as Andrew O'Brien's snap shot found it's way through some bodies and past Phinney. The Moose responded quickly once again, when a screen from Mike Sgarbossa was enough to cause McKenna problems on Charles-David Beaudoin's first career AHL goal. As the period wound down, Manitoba again took over the momentum testing McKenna and the Stars' defence repeatedly.
Texas scored early again in the third, when a rebound off a Gavin Bayreuther shot bounced right to the stick of Denis Gurianov, who pushed the lead back to three. Texas built on that lead on the power play when Curtis McKenzie cleaned up a rebound for his sixth goal of the season against Manitoba. The Moose didn't quit, though, and Chase De Leo fed a pass through centre to send JC Lipon in alone. Lipon whipped a shot top corner on McKenna. Just over one minute later, Mason Appleton found Sami Niku at the point. Niku hammered home his 13th of the season. That was as close as Manitoba would get, though and Texas held on for the 6-4 victory.
