Game Story

The Manitoba Moose (39-20-4-4) and Rockford IceHogs (34-25-4-4) clashed in a key divisional matchup at Bell MTS Place on Monday night.  The visitors opened the scoring 9:10 into the contest off a Cody Franson one-timer on the power play.  Rockford added to its lead just over two minutes later when Henrik Samuelsson poked in a puck sitting loose on the goal line.  The Manitoba power play made a push late in the power play looking to cut into the deficit, but Rockford goaltender Collin Delia had all the answers.  Delia made 13 saves in the first frame to keep the IceHogs in front 2-0 after 20 minutes.

Manitoba got on the board 11:08 into the period during a segment of four-on-four play.  Mason Appleton rushed the puck ahead and picked the corner above Delia's shoulder to get the Moose within one.  Rockford restored the two-goal edge with three minutes left in the second.  Tyler Sikura had a rebound bounce right to his stick, and the IceHogs forward knocked the puck into the Moose net for a 3-1 Rockford advantage after 40 minutes.

The IceHogs expanded their lead to 4-1 courtesy of a William Pelletier goal with nine minutes left in the contest.  Manitoba made it interesting late as Jan Kostalek fired home his fifth of the season with 3:36 to go.  That was as close as the home-side would come, falling 4-2 to the Icehogs.

Quick Hits

  • Mason Appleton recorded his 20th goal and 60th point of the season.
  • Brett Welychka tallied his first career AHL assist.
  • Attendance was announced at 3,668.

Quotable

Head Coach Pascal Vincent - "At the end of the day we need to execute.  The mindset has to be right. I felt we wanted to play a skill game early, and it's not our game. It's not our team identity.  It's not who we are. If we don't respect who we are, we're going to see the same results. It's about what we do, how we prepare ourselves, and making sure we stick to the plan."

Forward Mason Appleton - "We didn't like our start.  We didn't execute our game-plan for most of the game. It was little things that we did wrong. We didn't chip pucks.  We didn't recover pucks.  We didn't work as hard as we needed to, to have the success we would have maybe deserved if we would have worked harder. We have to try to put that game behind us, learn from it, and get two points Wednesday."
