Game Story
The Manitoba Moose (1-2-0-0) opened their home schedule against the Cleveland Monsters (1-1-0-0) on Friday night at Bell MTS Place.  Following an electric introduction of the 2017-18 Moose to their fans, the host team came out firing.  Manitoba sent 19 shots on the Cleveland net in the first frame, but didn’t cash in until late in the frame.  Following a Moose power play, Cam Maclise worked the puck back to the line for Julian Melchiori, who fired a rocket to the back of the net to give the Moose a 1-0 lead.  Michael Hutchinson turned away seven shots in the period to help the Moose to the one-goal edge after one.

The tables turned on the Moose in the second period with the Monsters racking up the shots.  Cleveland converted their 18-6 shot advantage into a few goals as well.  The Monsters tied the game 2:04 into the frame when Calvin Thurkauf stripped the puck in the slot and fired it home.  The visitors grabbed the lead with just under five minutes left in the period as Carter Camper converted on a power play.  The Moose came right back down the ice to tie the game with Kyle Connor opening up Jack Roslovic who buried the second Moose goal of the night 33 seconds later.  The Monsters wasted no time in replying as, just 49 seconds later, Joe Pendenza scored with a backhanded try to give Cleveland a 3-2 lead after two.

The Moose didn’t trail long as the third period got going.  JC Lipon sent Patrice Cormier in on a breakaway and the captain pulled the puck around Brad Thiessen to even the game 3-3.  Unfortunately for the 7,582 Moose fans in attendance, Joe Pendenza struck again just shy of the seven minute mark of the frame, picking the far top corner to put the Monsters in front for good.  Thiessen shut the door the rest of the way as the Monsters downed the Moose, 4-3.

Quotable

Head Coach Pascal Vincent – “In the first period we were playing our game, we were playing fast.  I think when you dominate a period like we did the first, you need to be up by more than one.  You need to take advantage of your chances.  Should have been two or three-nothing.  We did a lot of good things in the first period, but we didn’t score enough goals.”

Moose Captain Patrice Cormier – “The first was probably our best period this year.  We were moving, making the right plays, smart plays.  (In the second) they had a little more jump.  We started making bad plays in our d-zone, if you could call it that, not sure plays.”
