Game Story
The Manitoba Moose (22-21-3-2) shut out the Texas Stars (23-19-3-2) in a 2-0 win at Bell MTS Place on Sunday afternoon. Similar to the previous evening, the teams came out of the first period in a scoreless draw. Each team had a chance to work with the power play, and both squads had attempts go off the post. Manitoba's opportunity came off the stick of Seth Griffith, who got behind the Texas defence, but hit the post with his backhand attempt. Goaltender Mikhail Berdin made 15 saves for the Moose in the opening period in his first AHL start since Dec. 15.
The middle frame saw the 0-0 deadlock continue for another 20 minutes. The best Moose chance came when Tucker Poolman redirected a Griffith seam pass behind Philip Desrosiers, but not by the post. On the special teams side of things, the Moose penalty kill came up with a stop early in the frame, and the club carried 34 seconds of power play time into the third period.
While they didn't capitalize on the early power play, the Moose finally broke open the scoring 4:50 into the third period. Griffith raced down the rink to cancel an icing call and create pressure on the forecheck, which caused a turnover for Dano, who found Logan Shaw wide open in front. Manitoba's leading goal-scorer went to the backhand to give the Moose the lead. With time dwindling, the Stars called Desrosiers to the bench for an extra attacker. As Texas pressed for a tying goal, Griffith chipped the puck out of the Manitoba zone, skated onto it, and found the empty net to give the Moose some breathing room. Berdin took care of the rest, making 12 saves in the third as the Moose picked up a 2-0 victory over the Stars.
