Game Story
On Friday night, the Manitoba Moose (32-27-4-2) scored a big win in their first visit to the home of the Colorado Eagles (33-24-3-1). The Moose opened the scoring at 6:45 of the first period when back-to-back Eagles penalties allowed Manitoba's power play to find the twine. Mason Appleton scored his 11th of the season off a Kristian Vesalainen rebound, slamming it past Pavel Francouz. Penalties were the story of the first period with fights in both the opening and final minute. A total of 26 penalty minutes were handed out in the first. Ken Appleby faced only five shots in the opening frame, stopping all of them to maintain the 1-0 lead.
Appleby's biggest stop came just over four minutes into the second period, when he stoned Michael Joly on a breakaway. He would be tested with regularity in the middle frame due to three Colorado power plays. After all the penalties, Appleby helped his team double their lead. The netminder tapped a puck to Logan Stanley who made an outstanding, rink-long pass to JC Lipon. Lipon fired it top corner on Francouz at 15:52 of the middle frame. Appleby finished off the second period with 19 saves, and the Moose leading 2-0.
Appleby finished off his incredible performance with fourteen more saves in the third period. The Moose took two late penalties allowing for some time at six-on-three with Francouz out of the net. Manitoba's penalty kill stood tall, killing off their sixth penalty of the night and securing the 2-0 victory. Appleby totalled 33 saves in the shutout.
