Former Manitoba Moose goaltender Cory Schneider has officially announced his retirement. The Marblehead, Mass. product appeared in 634 games between the NHL (410) and AHL (224) during his 16-season professional career.
Schneider played 136 games in antlers while posting an 84-45-5 record, supported by a 2.31 goals-against average and .921 save percentage. The netminder owns four Moose franchise records including wins in a single season and career shutouts.
During the 2008-09 campaign, Schneider posted an AHL-best 2.04 goals-against average and .928 save percentage. He captured the Baz Bastien Memorial Award as the league’s top goaltender, the Harry ‘Hap’ Holmes Memorial award for the league’s lowest combined goals-against average and was named to the AHL’s First All-Star Team.
Schneider’s 2.04 goals-against average from the 2008-09 season is the second-lowest mark in a single season, and he owns the franchise’s fourth-best career mark (2.31). His career .921 save percentage is tied for fourth on the all-time list.
During his time with the Moose, Schneider backstopped the team to 17 wins in the playoffs, including an appearance in the 2009 Calder Cup Finals, while recording a 2.28 goals-against average and a .922 save percentage in the post-season.
Schneider went on to play for the Vancouver Canucks, New Jersey Devils and New York Islanders while collecting a 171-159-58 record in the NHL. He compiled a 2.43 goals-against average, .918 save percentage and 26 shutouts during his career. In 2011, Schneider won the NHL’s William Jennings Trophy for the league’s best combined goals-against average alongside Roberto Luongo. He led the NHL with five shutouts during the 2013 campaign and played in the NHL All-Star Game in 2016.
