Game Story
The Manitoba Moose (25-7-3-2) and Grand Rapids Griffins (18-16-1-4) went toe-to-toe at Bell MTS Place on Wednesday.  The Moose got out of the gate quickly thanks to Buddy Robinson scoring on a breakaway after he was sent in alone by Mason Appleton.  Grand Rapids tied the game just 28 seconds later when Matt Lorito stole the puck and out-waited Eric Comrie for the goal.  The score stayed deadlocked for most the frame despite the Moose putting up 18 shots in the period.  With 44 seconds left in the first, Corey Elkins nabbed the puck for Grand Rapids and used an open lane to the net to put the Griffins in front 2-1 at the break.

With the Moose on the penalty kill early in the period, Comrie came up with a big-time blocker save to keep the Moose within one.  The Manitoba power play put together multiple scoring opportunities with its only chance of the middle period, but Griffins goaltender Jared Coreau kept the Moose from evening out the score.  Special teams continued to play a factor when the Griffins extended their lead on an Axel Holmstrom power play goal with six minutes to go in the frame.  The 3-1 Grand Rapids advantage held into the intermission.

Grand Rapids opened the third period by upping the lead to three.  Holmstrom potted his second of the game, banking the puck into the net from below the goal line.  A late comeback wouldn’t be in the cards for the Moose on this night.  Dylan McIlrath added another goal to Grand Rapids’ total with 1:48 remaining as the Griffins took a 5-1 victory.

Quick Hits

  • Buddy Robinson matched his career high with his 17th goal of the season.
  • This is just the second time the Moose have lost back-to-back games on the season.
  • Attendance was announced at 3,108.

Quotable

Head Coach Pascal Vincent – “Last game against the Griffins and today’s game, there were periods of time where we are playing properly, we were playing with pace and playing fast, but we need to keep it consistent.  That’s what we did when we had success.  We were consistent in our routes and in our speed.  When we slow it down, we’re just an average team.”
