Game Story
The Manitoba Moose (6-4-0-0) and Chicago Wolves (6-3-0-1) renewed their rivalry at Bell MTS Place on Friday night. Mikhail Berdin was busy in the Moose net to get the evening started, making 12 saves in the opening frame. The Wolves only got one puck past the rookie netminder as Gage Quinney tallied on a Chicago power play. That marker went down as the only goal of the period as the Wolves took a 1-0 lead to the second.
Manitoba tied the game just 96 seconds into the middle frame, courtesy of a power play goal. Michael Spacek moved into the slot and fired a wrister past Oscar Dansk for his first of the season. The Moose grabbed their first lead of the night with another power play tally when C.J. Suess battled a rebound over the line at 4:32 of the period. Daniel Carr knotted things up for Chicago with the Wolves' second power play goal at the 9:21 mark. Just over a minute later, Mason Appleton scored the game's first even strength goal, grabbing a rebound and wrapping it around Dansk on the backhand for a 3-2 Moose lead. The Manitoba penalty kill came up with a big stop late in the frame, holding back a Chicago four-on-three chance in the late stages of the period to keep the Moose in front.
Seth Griffith added to the Moose lead 2:38 into the third when his attempt to knock the puck off a defender's stick ended up in the Chicago net. Griffith set up Luke Green for Manitoba's fifth of the night three minutes later. The three-goal lead proved to be important as the Wolves climbed back into the contest. Coach Rocky Thompson called his goaltender to the bench with 10:21 remaining in the game with the Wolves on the power play. Chicago didn't strike with the man advantage, but cashed in with six minutes left as Winnipegger Brooks Macek knocked home a Brandon Pirri feed. The Wolves made it a one-goal game with 4:43 to go on a Nic Hague shot from the top of the slot. The Moose dug in their heels from there, and held the Wolves back, claiming a 5-4 victory from the wild game.
