Game Story
The Manitoba Moose (11-10-2-2) played the second game of their back-to-back set against the Charlotte Checkers (11-13-2-0) on Wednesday. The goaltenders took centre stage in the opening frame. Veteran Michael Leighton kept the Moose off the board, making 11 saves. The one puck that beat him, found the crossbar instead of twine off the stick of Jack Roslovic. Much like Ondrej Pavelec the night before, Eric Comrie faced his fair share of shots in the first and turned aside all 14 attempts. The dueling goaltenders sent the teams to the second tied 0-0.
The goal judges were busier in the second period. JC Lipon opened the scoring 2:27 into the period by jamming in his own rebound after Kyle Connor put on some nifty moves down low to get him the puck. Midway through the frame, Phil Di Giuseppe was the recipient of an Andrew Miller setup and Di Giuseppe made a nice move to get around Comrie to tie the game. With just under five minutes left in the period, Peter Stoykewych fired a shot from the point and the puck threaded its way through the crowd in front to put the Moose back in front. Manitoba nearly got to the break with the lead, but Andrew Poturalski evened the score at 2-2 on a late Checkers powerplay.
Despite both teams pushing for the advantage, the scoring tightened up again in the third. Eric Comrie (eight saves) and Michael Leighton (nine saves) did their jobs between the pipes to keep the score tied 2-2. The Manitoba penalty kill came up with two timely stops in the late stages of the third to force overtime. The extra frame only lasted 17 seconds as Di Giuseppe kept on a two-on-one and sniped his second of the night for the overtime winner as Charlotte took the game, 3-2.
