Game Story
The Manitoba Moose (31-27-4-2) thwarted a comeback from the San Diego Gulls (31-20-4-3), taking a 4-3 overtime win on Tuesday Night at Bell MTS Place.  The Moose came out with a strong start as Ryan White scored his second in as many games just 2:05 into the contest.  The hosts made it 2-0 at 5:37 as Logan Shaw beat a few defenders and then got past Kevin Boyle on the wraparound.  The goal prompted San Diego to make a swap in net as Jeff Glass came into the game.  Cameron Schilling gave the Moose a 3-0 edge with 5:22 left in the period, knocking in a White rebound.  San Diego fired back in the late stages of the frame as Kalle Kossila finished off a pretty passing sequence for a power play tally with 1:10 left in the period.  Just eight seconds later, Ben Street scored on a wraparound to get the Gulls within one goal as the Moose took a 3-2 lead into the intermission.

The teams cooled off in the second period as Eric Comrie turned away 11 shots and Glass stopped eight for a scoreless frame.  San Diego's best chance came on a scramble in front of Comrie during a five-on-three power play, but Tucker Poolman helped his goaltender dig the puck off the line.  The Moose also had a chance during that penalty kill as White nearly had his second of the game on a breakaway during the two-man disadvantage.  Manitoba almost pushed the lead to two when Kristian Vesalainen found some room, but his wrister rang off the post and the Moose had to settle for a 3-2 lead through 40 minutes.

The Moose maintained the 3-2 edge until Kiefer Sherwood scored shorthanded 9:36 into the period to tie the game.  The score stayed locked until the final 12 seconds of overtime.  Already having made a slick move to the net and being denied earlier in the extra frame, Vesalainen made a power move around a San Diego defender and tucked the puck past Glass to give the Moose the 4-3 win.

Quick Hits

  • Kristian Vesalainen scored his first AHL overtime winner.

Quotable
Forward Kristian Vesalainen on the team's start - "Obviously we started a lot better in the game than last game.  I think it was a good opportunity for us to better our game, and it was a great win."

Forward Ryan White on the overtime period - "The guys were buzzing out there in OT.  I thought we controlled the pace most of the overtime and had some good chances.  [Comrie] made a huge save right before [Vesalainen] got that one.  I said to one of the boys, 'I don't think I could ever make that play.'  It was a big boy play by the 'Big Fin' there, and there's a reason we got him here.  I'm glad he got to contribute tonight and hopefully get his feet wet a little bit with us we'll just keep going."
